The 50th Anniversary of Fair Housing

The Fiftieth Anniversary Fair Housing Celebration

The 50th Anniversary of Fair HousingThe Fair Housing Act was signed into law in 1968, and the nation will celebrate the 50th anniversary of fair housing next year.  The Battle Creek Area Association of REALTORS® will be holding several educational events in the community through a homebuyer education seminar program for the fiftieth anniversary fair housing celebration year.  Additionally, they will be holding more expanded continuing educational classes for REALTORS® on fair housing, and its history as part of the Anniversary of this historic document.

In advanced planning for this, in July of 2013, the US Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), the federal agency charged with writing the rules for the Fair Housing Act, issued a proposed new regulation to implement the affirmatively furthering fair housing requirements of the Fair Housing Act.

Through this new rule, HUD proposes to provide its program participants (states, counties, municipalities and public housing agencies) with more effective means to affirmatively further the purposes and policies of the Fair Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968.  Thus programs were offered to municipalities around the country, and Battle Creek has been a city actively supporting the initiative since it was introduced.

The Fair Housing Act essentially has two goals: to end housing discrimination and to promote diverse, inclusive communities. The second goal is defined as Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH), and it embodies our strongly-held values of fair access and equal opportunity for all Americans.  That why recognizing the fiftieth anniversary fair housing is important, for the freedom it has brought through diversity to our nation.

Diverse, inclusive communities with access to good jobs, schools, health care, transportation, and housing are considered to be crucial to our nation’s prosperity in the 21st century.

The 50th anniversary of fair housing is a significant event, and will not only be celebrated at a local level in Michigan and Battle Creek, but also on the national stage with the National Association of REALTORS®.
